Science in a Flash

Each year at Homecoming, the Wiess School of Natural Sciences at Rice University presents alumni and visitors with science snapshots from a wide portfolio of current cutting-edge research. The five-minute “flash” presentations are given by only a few of Rice’s exceptional graduate and postdoctoral researchers. In 2018, I had the privilege to represent the Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences and showcase my science on the relationship between flooding and river channel dimension with friends of Rice University.

World Oceans Day at HMNS

This is a collaboration between Rice University (including Prof. Lauren Simkins and Prof. Lindsay Prothro) and the Houston Museum of Natural Science to conduct outreach activities during World Oceans Day. I used a wave tank (constructed by Prof. Travis Swanson) with variable “sea-level” to demonstrate wave processes acting on a scaled physical model of the Texas coast to stress that sea-level rise is a real threat to coastal communities.

Outcroppings, the Magazine of the Earth, Environment and Energy

While at Rice University, I regularly contributed articles to Outcroppings, a magazine that showcases exciting news and research at the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences. These articles cover a wide range of topics, including personal interviews with faculty members and students, briefs of new research and field work, and reports on various departmental events, such as Homecoming.

Science Olympiad

Every Spring, Rice University hosts Science Olympiad invitationals, in which local high school students come on campus to compete in knowledge tests of various science disciplines, such as physics and earth science. I participated as an exam writer, grader, and proctor in 2018 and 2019. The tests are designed to cover a wide range of topics in geoscience, from plate tectonics to cryosphere, using diverse question formats.
